Walking, Nature and Spirituality

When most of us set out for a walk, we are doing it on the pretence of exercising; to either achieve a daily goal (eg. 30 minutes of exercise) or reach a desired goal (eg. weight loss). We treat it as another thing to tick off the list of things to do that day. We rarely see it as anything more. We know through science that walking lowers blood pressure, reduces stress, improves mood, lubricates the joints, improves heart health etc, but these are only a list of physical and mental benefits. What about the spiritual benefits? Does a simple act such as walking or being out in nature benefit us on a spiritual level? Well I’m here to tell you that it definitely does! Mediation is not the only way to achieve a connection with your soul and hear the messages from within.  

Now you could walk on a treadmill (in a gym or in your home) but that will not yield the same results as walking outdoors amongst nature. The key word here is NATURE. There is something very special about nature; the trees, the sun, the moon, the stars, the grass, the wildlife, the oceans, the lakes and rivers. It is very different to being indoors, you do not need to be highly spiritual to feel and understand this. This is because nature has a naturally HIGHER VIBRATION than your living room or the gym. Now I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with the gym or home environment, but by being outdoors and amongst nature, you will be surrounded by those higher vibrations, and it can allow you to connect more deeply.

When I first started walking, like most, I did it for exercise. I continue to walk now because I enjoy the connection, the insights, the clarity and higher understanding that my Divine self/God provides for me. 

Most will find that after being outside you do feel better, more grounded, think more clearly, and become more calm and relaxed. This is because you start tapping into these higher frequencies bringing your vibration up closer to match it. You are literally becoming in sync with nature! How cool is that!  

This “tapping in” of sorts does not happen instantly. For me to connect, I find I need to be out in nature for about 3-5 minutes to really start feeling the energy shift. I also feel this connection more profoundly when I am alone vs when I am with company. It’s nice to be in company, however, if your purpose is to connect within and hear the messages more clearly, company will keep you too distracted, as your focus will most likely be on connecting with each other vs yourself. Also consider walking in areas that are away from the hustle and bustle of life like roads and busy sidewalks. You want to be able to hear nature.

Although a lot of people opt for wearing headphones when out walking, this is something that I would not recommend when trying to connect with this higher vibration. Music is wonderful and definitely has its benefits, but connecting within will be a little harder if you are distracted by talking/lyrics or beats of a song. However, if you can only walk or be in nature where it is noisy then headphones could be just what you need; Choose your music wisely, and stick to nature sounds or meditative music to get you into the right frame of mind. We are so unique so experiment and see what works best for you. 

The pace will depend on individual preference. Some may prefer to run, while others need to stroll to get the same effect. For me personally I have to force myself to walk slower than I would normally, otherwise I miss the present moment and all the beauty in the natural environment. Take the time to experiment with a pace that works best for you. If you start to feel stressed, hurried or impatient, your focus is on the finishing line instead of the present moment. This is a sign to slow down and to take in your surroundings. 

Nature’s high vibrational energy will give you clearer, more insightful conversations with your Divine self/God. It will give you the answers and insights to parts of yourself you didn’t even know existed. You’ll learn so much about yourself, your wants, your needs and even the areas that you need to work on. Sitting in nature will also yield the same results. Walking has so many benefits, and now you can see the spiritual benefits as well! It allows us to incorporate our body, mind and spirit to help us reach our fullest potential.

For best results in connecting within I find you need to be calm, peaceful and relaxed both in body and mind. Once you have been walking for approximately 5 minutes or when you feel calm, peaceful and relaxed, this is when I would start to ask for guidance from my Divine self/God. Still to this day it amazes me the answers I receive from within while walking or spending time out in nature.  Some of these answers I know would not have come through if I did not make an effort to go on my daily walk. It is truly an untapped gift we all have that is right outside our doorstep! This is something everyone is able to do, anytime of the day, throughout any season or life stage. Imagine how the world would change if every person on this planet spent more time outdoors or went for frequent walks not for exercise but to connect within! What a wonderous world it could be where everyone is living their highest truth!
